Home Networking Tips

Home networks are great when they're working, but can be a real headache when they stop.  Our experience seems to be that older routers have difficulty keeping up with today's connections.  Sometimes it's possible to get them working again by switching everything off for 30 seconds, then starting at the wall and switching the boxes on one by one - modem, router, computer - but if you're going to do this, be patient, and wait for each to finish starting up before switching on the next!

If you consistently have problems, consider replacing your router.  We're a great fan of Linksys, and have installed several of their new Wireless-N routers.  They go in without fuss and seem to work superbly.  Our own wireless network runs on an earlier version of these, and it doesn't seem to matter what order things get switched on/off, it just works!  Highly recommended.  Just make sure you choose the 'cable' one if you're on cable and the 'ADSL' one if you're on ADSL.
